Creating Comfy Overnight Stays: Futon And Sleeping Space Hacks That Every Host Needs To Know

People love hosting overnight guests as it provides a relaxed opportunity to reconnect with loved ones, even if they don't have a spare room for friends or family members. According to a recent survey, 40 percent of respondents said that they don't have a guest room. More than 50 percent said that they let their guests sleep on the couch, while 18 percent actually give up their own bed so their guests can have a good night's sleep.

If you're planning to take your hosting duties more seriously, think about getting a futon, then create a next-level overnight stay experience for your guests. A high-quality minimalist futon can be just as comfortable as a conventional bed, and with a bit of styling, you can create a cozy bed and breakfast vibe that your friends and family will surely love. For comfy and luxe overnight stays, here are some futon and sleeping space hacks that every host needs to know.

Create a Hotel-Like Atmosphere

If you want your guests to enjoy their stay, it's important to make your home clean and inviting, and make sure that everything is in good working order. For general home repairs and minor improvements, call a handyman to tackle projects inside and outside your home. Prioritize leaky faucets and clogged drains, and ask them to change the AC filters and patch up any holes in drywall or plastering. Afterwards, decide where to place your futon area. You don't have to have a separate room for it since you can set it up in the living room, your home office, or your children's study room. But to make your guests’ stay a five-star experience, think about creating a hotel-like atmosphere in the space.

First, clear the area of clutter, then define the futon space with a large rug. Next, place a large decorative basket near the futon to hold extra pillows and blankets, then add a smaller basket or tray where they can place their phone, jewelry, and bedtime essentials. Make sure to have an available outlet nearby where they can charge their phone or tablet.

To make your guests feel pampered, treat them as though they're staying at a spa. Place a fresh, fluffy folded towel on top of the futon, as well as a pair of guest slippers. Provide them with a new toothbrush, a light snack, and a bottle of water so they won't have to fumble around in the dark just in case they get hungry or thirsty in the middle of the night. Fill the space with a calming scent by using a diffuser or lighting a scented candle before they arrive.

Add Plushness and Comfort

Sleeping on the floor may seem like the complete opposite of a luxurious sleeping experience. However, you can elevate your guest's sleeping space by adding plushness and comfort to the futon. Place a 2 to 3-inch memory foam topper on top of the futon to create a cushiony surface. No topper? No problem. Just spread a thick comforter on top, then tuck the edges under the futon to make it feel softer. Use deep-pocket fitted bedsheets so the corners don't pop off while your guest is sleeping.

As for pillows, pick ones that offer firm, contouring support such as adjustable latex pillows or traditional Japanese pillows filled with buckwheat hulls. These won't tilt your guests’ head forward and cause neck strain, and they provide consistent, cushioned support throughout the night. Alternatively, you can supply both down and firm memory foam pillows so your guests can choose their preferred support. Don't forget to add a blanket. For mild and cool nights, provide a light fleece or waffle-weave cotton blanket. During the winter season, switch them out for dense wool, faux fur, or down blankets.

Provide Convenience and Sleeping Comforts

Guests who will be staying for a few days will need a folding suitcase stand or luggage rack so they won't have to bend down to dig through their bags. For an overnight guest or impromptu sleepovers, provide a hanger for their clothes, as well as comfortable pajamas to sleep in. Get coordinated pajama sets that your guests can use while lounging around in the morning since these will help them feel more put-together instead of giving them an old shirt to sleep in.

You don't need to have a spare bedroom to host overnight guests. All you need is a futon, and some thoughtful, low-effort touches. Consider these tips to make your guests feel pampered, and provide a premium hospitality experience that they'll never forget.
